Uninstalled from Control, wiped with Ccleaner (including registry fro unused and invalid registry keys just in case), deleted all icons Desktop and Quicklaunch bar…. then reinstalled fresh (ie Not from exe file saved in Downloads

My brain is starting to hurt but Chrome is not as good and I hate IE

find mozilla firefox in program files (x86) and delete the file:updater.exe Nothing bad will happen.
then go to tools, options, advanced, update, and set it to not update.

check these 2 immediately after you re-install Firefox 7, and every now and then.

there is a link towards the top of THIS page to download 7.0.1

Later versions really suck, and 7 seems just right.

Thanks for taking the time Eli
I eventually and accidentally found what was happening. When downloaded the FF file did not leave the EXE extension on the Firefox file with the logo (the run command one I think) So I amended it, literally, to fiefox.exe and then double clicked… It works – Got V 7. Mind you, I cannot find the Tools button to do the other amendments Plus when you say delete the Updater.exe – I only have Updater NO EXE extension… all a bit strange but happier with FF than Chrome

If you got the time any response the last points would be appreciated

        Thanks

maybe it is a toolbar issue that made the tools disappear… do you have view?
but deleting updater file is probably all you need to do.

that was sheer inspiration to change the extension
So much that i want to look in to other things you can do with changing them when things won’t open
          filext.com ??
          http://www.fileinfo.com/filetypes/common …common ones

its crazy, with FF7, still being the most stable. likely there’s stuff going on in the background with later versions that cause blocks and other havoc.

found out that if the tools/options/advanced/update settings don’t work, go to program files (x86), mozilla firefox,
    and delete updater.exe

I like 7. just changed it back last week, and in the middle of something a few minutes ago it switched me to 9.0.1 !!!!!!!
I’m appalled, like all you. Plus, it had checked auto update in above tools file, so we will see if the updater deletion 1) stays gone, and
    2) the unchecked box stays unchecked.

Glad to see that I’m not alone on this. v8 is poor. MS poor. Not what I expect from Mozilla. I know that no-one is perfect, but… ah well, at least I know next time. Don’t install for a few months, until you’ve seen the reviews.
    - Grey font on white. Agreed – it’s blatantly stupid. So in your face obvious, you wonder how the hell it got through.
    - Add ons have gone. It would be helpful to have a warning box “If you hit ‘Finish’ and install, you will lose part or all of the functionality of ‘blah’, ‘blahh’, ‘bla’ and ‘blaa’ add-ons.” I’m gutted to have lost Screengrab and Copylinks amongst others.
    - Unstable. Crashes, drags and slows, unlike FF normally does, but like IE update did, before I rolled back.
    - Restore Session fails often and loses my tabs/pages. This is one of the main reasons that I love FF, so to lose it was the final straw.

Sorry, FF. The problems with 8 and then trying to return to 7 were too much. And 9 Beta was as slow as 8. So I am now using Chrome … but hoping FF returns to its winning ways that made me a fan right from the very beginning of FF, right up until 8 ruined it.

Programmers: DON’T change things that DON’T need fixing. Again: Grey/Silver font on white background is ALWAYS difficult to see. I’ve even seen it used for directions on over the counter medications! Tiny print, almost invisible font color……What is wrong with you people that do that?!!!!!

I do NOT like this latest version of Firefox. The home button moved, the refresh button moved….lol took me days to find…maybe because the colors have changed, changed to boring grey. What makes people think that grey font on white background is a good thing????? I hate the tool bar area. I hate that I can’t see the bar with all my websites open at one time, and being able to easily click and close them from the bar. If I can, I haven’t noticed yet. Finding and getting used to these changes STINKS!

Firefox 8.0 really missed the mark with this version operating with Ubuntu Linux. I never know what is going to happen each and every time I open a website. Even if the website starts out working I never know when Firefox 8.0 will start to act up. It is like it does not recognize scripts and HTML, etc. This problem is very random but very annoying. I am going back one version which never caused me any trouble. In fact It never caused me any grief at all. Right now I am forced to use Internet Explorer which is working perfectly. Yuck!?

Firefox 8 is full of memory leaks, bugs and crash prone. I like to keep lots of tabs open, by lots I mean like 50-80. I saw Firefox get to 1.5GB in memory with extension; ridiculous. Firefox 7 used half the ram, and was stable.

I ditto everyone going back to Firefox 7.0.1

Well, I have had all the same problems with FF8 as the others and also the same problems trying to regress to FF7. I have been using the beta for FF9 for a week or two and while it is somewhat more functional than 8, it still has too many problems (of course, it IS a beta). So since I cannot bring myself to use IE (even though it works fine) I am going to download Chrome. I don’t want to, but the latest FF iterations are just too problematic to stay with FF (which I have used exclusively, ever since its very beginning). Breaks my heart, but I cannot continue to live with the problems.

I have been using Firefox 8 for a couple of weeks and find it wants to crash and is impossible to remove from the system using Task Manager…thereby requiring a restart of Windows. So I am hoping by moving back to Firefox 7 it will be more stable. Otherwise, version 6 here I come. My OS is Windows XP Professional. I have used version 8 with Linux OK, but only use that OS when doing engineering work.

Okay, I’m back to Chrome. It’s unbelievable that Firefox/Mozilla f*ck up their name. They bring out new versions without checking if the add-ons work and if they check, they don’t tell you upfront. So you’re stuck with a useless browser.

Were you able to go back to FF7? I followed some directions I found and unchecked updates. My program list says FF7 Version now, but it looks like FF8 and is VERY slow. So I’m not sure what version I have. I’m not a tech person, but I’m in sales. Never saw such disregard for what used to be satisfied customers. Obviously those here who do know computers are savvy enough to know this is crazy.

Version 8 SUX. too many issues with interrelated common gaming apps and too many java issues. Dont Bother updating and i personally recommend disabling auto updater.

Agree with Bill. Had FFv701 and worked perfectly. Then switched to new HDD and installed FFv801. This is THE slowest version of FF EVER! With 4Mb DSL connection, it reminded me how it looked like when i was connecting via Dial-up…

Made the mistake of allowing my re-install of FF 7 to update itself! Guess what? It turned my FF 7 back into FF 8. DOH!!! However, as I was about to re-re-install 7, I happened to notice FF 9 Beta. Since I figured I had nothing to lose at this point, I installed it. And even though it is a beta release, it works way, WAY better than 8. In fact, with all of the caveats associated with betas, I would recommend people try it. You can always go back to 7 if you don’t like it. (Just don’t let 7 upgrade itself once it is installed. You’ll wind up back at 8!)

Don’t bother with 8. Let them sort it out first. I spent all day messing with it. healthy regi

I have had Beta’s that work better than FF8. It often will not render HTML properly, does not handle java well, jumbles some pages, and generally freezes at inconvenient moments. Just now, to complete a task I had to copy the url I was on into IE!!! It worked fine there. I am running Vista Ultimate (I know, I know) on a solid machine and am now re-installing FF 7. It was not great, but at least it worked.

    Thanks, for this FF 7.0.1

I have a question, I have been advised to disable the auto update, before running it, if anyone has instructions on this, I would appreciate it very much, thanks in advance. I await the great minds of info…

      Menu bar-Tools-Options-Advanced-Update
You can see “Automatically check for updates to:“
If the selection of “Firefox” is selected,it will be updated to 8 automatically.

Just downloaded FF8. It is not compatable with AVG anti-virus, and facebook. I don’t like or recommend it.

Just updated to Firefox 8.0 by mistake!!! What a piece of garbage! I normally don’t do this because Mozilla’s Firefox has been very buggy with recent releases. Version 3.0 was my workhorse for many, many years because of the lack of support and compatibility with so many cool plug-ins. Version 8 was so unstable that once upgraded, I crashed 5 times instantaneously when I opened Firefox (once). Rebooting doesn’t help. I was “ok” with version 7 and thank you folks for providing this service as the Mozilla site makes it impossible to find it. Worse I wanted to email Mozilla to tell them I couldn’t use 8.0 and was prompted to have the latest version before I could! Very, very unlike Mozilla. Shame! I’ll be looking at other browsers.

Opera is working fairly well for me because it can access and run sites that Mozilla seems to have trouble with, like when I’m accessing a HotSpot somewhere or my school forum.

Thanks for the download. 8 has driven me nuts for 5 days. It appears to be totally unstable which is a shame as I have never before had a problem with the Modzilla browser since its advent. Sometime 5 minutes, sometimes 20 minutes, but for no apparent reason “Oops”! Checked for Malware etc but I am clean!

Mind you, Chrome (that I used temporarily to download 7 ) was abysmally slow! Now back to good old 7 and all is well with the world.
