What’s new and issues fixed in Firefox 19

  • Built-in PDF viewer
  • Canvas elements can export their content as an image blob using canvas.toBlob()
  • Startup performance improvements (bugs 715402 and 756313)
  • CSS @page is now supported
  • CSS viewport-percentage length units implemented (vh, vw, vmin and vmax)
  • CSS text-transform now supports full-width
  • Certain valid WebGL drawing operations are incorrectly rejected, leaving incomplete rendering in affected pages (825205)
  • Starting Firefox with -private flag incorrectly claims you are not in Private Browsing mode (802274)
  • Plugins stop rendering when the top half of the plugin is scrolled off the top of the page, in HiDPI mode

  3. The PDF reader in Firefox is actually implemented in JavaScript. It’s quite an achievement!

    It doesn’t bloat the software much; it’s just a .js file that gets loaded when needed. I personally think this is the RIGHT way to do it; external binary plugins are much more susceptible to security problems than simply using the already existing JavaScript engine, which has been time tested to be secure.

    Worry not, Firefox is in good hands.

  4. The native PDF viewer can be disabled by setting “pdfjs.disabled” to true in about:config. If you want PDF files to open automatically in the system’s PDF reader, you may also need to adjust the action for PDF files in Options > Applications.
